How to Unblock a Drain

Start by identifying the drain: basin waste, shower trap, kitchen sink, outdoor gully or soil stack. Local wastes are fair DIY territory (trap clean, plunger). Shared stacks and underground drains are not — wrong tools can crack pipes or push the blockage beyond easy reach.

For outdoor gullies, remove the grid and scoop out silt, leaves and debris with gloves. Flush with a bucket of water to test. If water stands or backs up from another point, stop. Do not force rods into unknown clay runs without knowing the layout of your Chelsea property’s drainage.

Biological cleaners can help maintain kitchen lines after a clear; caustic chemicals are a poor first choice on older systems. Never mix products. If you have already used chemicals, tell the engineer before they open pipes so they can take precautions.

Match the method to the drain. A kitchen sink is usually grease and food in the trap, so put a bucket underneath, unscrew the bottle or U-bend trap, clean it out and refit it with the washers seated. A basin or shower is usually hair and soap at the plug or trap, so lift the waste, hook out the hair and plunge with the overflow covered by a damp cloth. A toilet needs a proper toilet plunger with a flange, used with slow, firm strokes rather than a stabbing motion, and a bucket of water poured from waist height can shift a soft blockage. If a toilet will not clear after a few attempts, stop, because forcing it can push the blockage into the soil pipe where it is harder to reach. An outside drain or inspection chamber is where rods come in. Lift the cover nearest the house: if it is full, the blockage is further down the run, and if it is empty, the blockage is between the house and that chamber. Screw the rods together, feed them in towards the blockage and always turn clockwise so the sections cannot unscrew and get lost in the pipe. Once water starts to move, flush through with a hose. A blocked sewer pipe or soil stack is not a DIY job. The signs are waste or dirty water coming up through a shower tray, bath or downstairs toilet, several fittings backing up at once, or a strong sewage smell indoors. Stop using every toilet and tap in the property, keep children and pets away from the water, and call for help.
