Does Boiling Water Unblock a Drain? What Works and What to Avoid

Boiling water only helps with one kind of blockage: a slow kitchen sink where soft grease or soap has built up close to the plughole. It will not clear hair, wipes, food scraps, cotton buds or anything further down the pipe, and it can do real harm. Repeatedly pouring boiling water into plastic waste pipes can soften them and loosen the joints, it can crack a porcelain toilet bowl, and on a sink that is already full of standing water it just sits there, cools and risks scalding you. Hot water from the tap with washing-up liquid, a plunger and cleaning the trap are safer and work better. If more than one fitting is blocked or an outside drain is overflowing, call Emergency Plumber Chelsea on 020 3002 6667.

Boiling water works on grease because heat softens it, but only for a short distance. Fat from cooking goes down the sink as a liquid, cools in the pipe and sets on the walls. A kettle of very hot water can loosen a thin layer near the plughole and let it wash further along, which is why the trick sometimes seems to work. The trouble is that the grease cools again a metre or two down the pipe and resets, often somewhere harder to reach. You have moved the problem rather than removed it, and repeating it over months is one of the ways a small kitchen blockage turns into a blocked drain outside.

It does nothing for most other blockages. Bathroom basins, baths and showers block with hair bound together by soap scum, which boiling water barely touches. Toilets block with too much paper, wipes, sanitary products or objects, none of which dissolve in hot water. Kitchen sinks often block with food scraps, coffee grounds and rice as well as grease. And any blockage in the underground drain, the gully outside or the stack is well beyond the reach of a kettle.

Plastic waste pipes can be damaged. Most sink, basin and bath wastes in modern kitchens and bathrooms, and in many refitted Chelsea flats, are plastic, joined with push-fit seals, compression rings or solvent weld. Waste pipe is made to handle hot water from the taps and appliances, but a full kettle of boiling water poured straight in, especially onto a blockage where it cannot drain away, can soften the pipe, distort the trap and loosen push-fit joints. The first you know of it may be a drip in the cupboard under the sink or, worse, a slow leak into the floor void or the ceiling of the flat below.

Never pour boiling water into a toilet. The sudden heat on cold porcelain can crack the bowl, and a hairline crack in a toilet pan may not show until it starts to weep at the base. It can also soften the wax or rubber seal where the pan meets the soil pipe. If a toilet is blocked, use a proper toilet plunger or a toilet auger instead; our guide on how to unblock a toilet goes through the steps.

Standing water plus boiling water is a scald risk. If the sink or bath is already full, boiling water has nowhere to go. It sits in the bowl, and the next thing you do, plunging, reaching into the trap or bailing it out, puts your hands into it. If you have already tried a chemical drain cleaner, adding boiling water can make it spit back out of the plughole. Let hot water cool before you work on a blocked fitting, and never mix drain products.

Try these instead, in this order. Start with hot water from the tap, not the kettle, and a good squirt of washing-up liquid, which breaks down grease without the risk. Next, use a cup plunger: fill the sink with a few centimetres of water, block the overflow with a damp cloth, and give it ten or fifteen firm pumps. If that fails, put a bowl under the trap, unscrew it by hand and clear out what has collected there, which is where most kitchen and basin blockages sit. For hair in a bath or shower, a cheap plastic drain snake pulls out far more than any liquid will. Our guides on how to unblock a sink and how to unblock a bath cover each step.

What about bicarbonate of soda and vinegar? The fizz looks impressive, but it is mostly carbon dioxide and water, and it does little to a real blockage. It can freshen a slightly smelly waste, and it does no harm, but it is not a fix for a sink that will not drain. Enzyme drain cleaners are useful for keeping pipes clear over time; they are slow and work on organic build-up rather than on solid blockages.

The biggest cause of blocked drains is what goes down them. In kitchens it is fat, oil and grease, followed by food waste. In bathrooms it is hair and soap. In toilets it is wet wipes, which do not break down in the way toilet paper does, even when the packet says flushable. Outside, autumn brings its own problem: leaves, moss and silt wash into gullies and rainwater drains and settle there, which is why outside drains in Chelsea's tree-lined streets and garden squares often block in October and November. Our guide on how to prevent blocked drains covers the simple habits that stop most of them.

Know when it is not a sink problem. If the kitchen sink and the washing machine both drain slowly, if the toilet gurgles when the bath empties, if water backs up into a shower tray or a downstairs toilet, or if the gully outside is overflowing, the blockage is in the shared drain rather than in one waste pipe. No amount of hot water will reach it, and plunging one fitting can push dirty water up another. Our guides on gurgling toilets and drains and a blocked outside drain explain what those signs mean. If sewage is coming up anywhere in the house, stop using water and call straight away.

Emergency Plumber Chelsea clears sinks, baths, toilets and drains across Chelsea, Knightsbridge, South Kensington, Sloane Square and Fulham. For a single blocked fitting we clear the trap and the waste run and check the joints; for a blocked drain we use rods, jetting or a camera to find where the blockage is and why it formed. We explain what we have found and the options before any work starts, and there is no call-out fee on jobs over 3 hours. See our blocked sink and drain unblocking services, or call 020 3002 6667.

Quick tips

  • Use hot tap water and washing-up liquid, not a full kettle, on a greasy kitchen sink.
  • Never pour boiling water into a toilet: it can crack the porcelain and damage the pan seal.
  • Do not add boiling water to a sink that is already full or has had a chemical cleaner in it.
  • Clean the trap under the sink or basin before reaching for any product; that is where most blockages sit.
  • More than one fitting draining slowly means the drain, not the sink. Call a plumber.

FAQs

Does pouring boiling water down a drain help unclog it?

Only for a light build-up of grease or soap near the plughole of a kitchen sink, and even then the grease tends to reset further down the pipe. It does not clear hair, wipes, food or deeper blockages, and it can damage plastic pipes and toilets. Hot tap water, washing-up liquid and a plunger are safer.

Can boiling water damage PVC pipes?

Repeatedly pouring boiling water into plastic waste pipes, especially onto a blockage where it cannot drain away, can soften the pipe and loosen push-fit joints, which can lead to leaks under the sink or into the floor below. Hot water from the taps is fine; a full kettle poured straight in is not a good habit.

Is it safe to pour boiling water down a toilet?

No. The sudden heat can crack the porcelain bowl and can damage the seal where the toilet meets the soil pipe. Use a toilet plunger or an auger instead, and call a plumber if the blockage will not shift.

What is the biggest cause of blocked drains?

Fat, oil and grease in kitchen sinks and wet wipes in toilets cause the most blockages, followed by hair and soap in bathrooms. Outside, leaves and silt block gullies and rainwater drains, particularly in autumn.
