How to Unblock a Toilet

Put on gloves. If the pan is near overflowing, do not flush. Bail water into a bucket until the level is manageable. Place a flange plunger over the outlet to create a seal, then push and pull firmly 10–15 times. The surge often dislodges paper and soft blockages.

If the level drops, wait a minute and try one test flush. If it clears, flush again with a few sheets of paper to confirm flow. If water rises again, stop flushing. A second plunger session sometimes works; repeated failed attempts usually mean a deeper obstruction in the pan outlet or soil pipe.

Do not use a wire coat hanger aggressively inside porcelain — you can crack the glaze or pan. Avoid chemical tablets stacked on top of a full blocked pan; they sit in stagnant water and create a hazardous mix for anyone who later plunges or snakes the line.
