What to Do When a Toilet Overflows

Lift the cistern lid and push the float arm down, or turn off the isolation valve on the fill pipe (often a small valve on the wall or under the cistern) until the cistern stops filling. If you cannot find a local valve, turn off the main stopcock. Do not keep flushing — that adds more water to a blocked pan or soil stack.

Put on gloves. Remove standing water with a jug into a bucket if needed so you can work safely. A plunger used with a good seal can clear simple pan blockages. Avoid pouring random chemicals into a toilet that may already be full; they rarely fix a solid blockage and make the job messier for the engineer.
