Radiator Cold at the Bottom but Hot at the Top? Here's Why
A radiator that is cold at the bottom but hot at the top almost always means sludge and corrosion have settled inside it, and the fix is a proper clean or a power flush rather than bleeding. A radiator that is the opposite way round, hot at the bottom but cold at the top, means trapped air and just needs bleeding. Cold at the bottom, hot at the top means sludge. Over years, the water in a central heating system corrodes steel radiators and cast components, and the rust it produces settles as a black, gritty sludge called magnetite. Because it is heavy, it sinks and collects along the bottom of each radiator, forming a layer that hot water cannot pass through. The top of the panel still heats because water flows across the upper part, but the bottom stays stubbornly cold even when the heating has been on for an hour. Bleeding will not fix this, because the problem is solid debris, not air. The more sludge a radiator holds, the harder the boiler and pump work to force water round, so a system full of it costs more to run and heats less of your home.
Cold at the top, hot at the bottom means air. Trapped air rises to the highest point inside the radiator and sits there, blocking hot water from filling the upper section. This is the common one people mistake for a bigger fault, and it is the easy fix. You bleed the radiator: turn the heating off, hold a cloth under the bleed valve at the top corner, and open the valve a quarter turn with a radiator key until the hissing air stops and a steady dribble of water appears, then close it. Diagnose it in a minute by feeling the panel with the heating fully on. Run the system for at least twenty minutes so every radiator has had time to warm, then place your hand across each one. Warm at the top and cold along the bottom edge points to sludge. Warm at the bottom and cold across the top points to air. Cold patches only in the centre, with warm edges, usually also mean sludge sitting in the lower channels. Note which radiators are affected and where, because the pattern tells a plumber whether you have a local blockage or a system-wide problem.

If several radiators are cold at the bottom, or the water that comes out when you bleed them is black and dirty, the whole system is contaminated. At that point flushing one radiator only moves the problem around, because the same sludgy water keeps circulating and settling again. This is when a full system clean is worth doing properly rather than patching radiator by radiator. The fix for a sludged system is a chemical flush or a power flush. A chemical clean involves dosing the system with a cleaner, running it hot for a period so the cleaner breaks the sludge down, then draining and refilling. You should consider a power flush when radiators are cold at the bottom across the system, when they take a long time to warm up, when the boiler is noisy or keeps cutting out, or when you can hear kettling and gurgling. It is also sensible before fitting a new boiler onto old pipework, because installers will often insist the system is cleaned first so the new heat exchanger is not clogged by old debris, and manufacturer warranties can depend on it being done. A full power flush on an average home takes most of a day, and longer on a larger Chelsea house with many radiators, because each panel is treated in turn. If the symptoms are milder, a chemical clean may be enough, and a plumber will advise which is proportionate rather than selling you the bigger job by default.
A magnetic filter and a dose of inhibitor are what stop the sludge coming back.
