Every condensing boiler produces a small amount of acidic waste water as it runs, and that water drains away through a plastic condensate pipe. When part of that pipe runs outside and the temperature drops below freezing, the water inside can turn to ice and block the pipe. The boiler detects that the condensate cannot drain, shuts down to protect itself, and shows a fault or lockout code. It is a safety feature working as intended, not a broken boiler.
You can usually confirm the diagnosis from three signs together. The lockout happened overnight or during a hard frost rather than gradually over weeks. The boiler display shows a fault code, and many Worcester, Vaillant, Ideal and Baxi models use codes in a recognisable range for condensate or ignition faults, so check the code against your manual. And when you press reset the boiler may fire briefly then cut out again, sometimes with a gurgling or bubbling noise from inside as it tries to push water past the ice. First, find the condensate pipe. It is a plastic pipe, usually white or grey and around 22mm across, that leaves the boiler and runs to a drain. Trace it from the underside of the boiler. A stronger fix is to replace a narrow external pipe with a larger diameter one, commonly upgrading to 32mm or wider outside, because a wider bore takes much longer to freeze solid and clears more easily if it starts to. The best fix of all is to re-route the condensate so it terminates internally into a suitable soil or waste pipe, which removes the exposed run entirely.
