A wet room is an open, level-access bathroom where the shower area drains straight into the floor, with no tray and often no screen. Because the whole floor can get wet, the entire room has to be tanked (fully waterproofed) and laid to a gentle fall toward the drain. Get the waterproofing and the gradient right and a wet room lasts for decades. For a point drain the fall is formed on all four sides, like a shallow inverted pyramid; for a linear drain the whole floor tilts in a single plane toward the channel, which is easier to build cleanly with big tiles.

Choosing between a linear drain and a point drain is mostly about tiles, flow and where the fall goes. A point drain sits in the middle or corner of the shower zone and needs the floor to slope from four directions, which suits small tiles or mosaic that can follow the pitch. A linear drain is a long channel, set against a wall or across a threshold, and lets the floor fall in one direction only, so you can use large-format tiles and get a crisper, more contemporary finish. Linear channels also tend to have a higher flow rate, which matters if you are fitting a big rain head or a body-jet system, both popular in high-spec Chelsea bathrooms.

Drain flow rate has to be matched to the shower output, not guessed. A modern rain head or a multi-outlet shower can deliver well over 20 litres a minute, and the drain must clear at least that or the floor floods.
